Roller derby might look like a bunch of girls racing on roller skates and violently bashing into each other, but going to an actual ‘bout’ (the correct term for a game) makes you realise that it is slightly more complicated than that.
Do you enjoy fine single malts or bourbon from time to time? Do you wish your local liquor store had a more comprehensive selection of whisky? If the answer to both questions is yes, then you’re highly likely to appreciate a whisky tasting at Bascule Bar at the Cape Grace hotel, located at the Waterfront.
I have always been a little bit jealous of people who have a dream. Ever since I finished middle school, friends and classmates always had such strong and defined wishes of what they wanted to do with their lives. They want to be movie stars, lawyers, dentists, police officers, diplomats, engineers, world champions and the list goes on. I have never had that dream, the one about becoming as good as possible in that one thing that interests me the most. What my dream is, is to have a dream.
Long Street is a multicultural place that is always busy and the Victorian-looking buildings add to its charm and give it a distinct flavour. There is however a grim reality always lurking at the edges of this colourful and vibrant street. The heavy tourist footfall makes it a prime location for robbers and pickpockets to ply their trade.
On 20 May 2013, a computer analyst boarded a flight from Hawaii to Hong Kong. A few weeks later, The UK’s Guardian newspaper published information which exposed the National Security Agency’s (NSA) mass surveillance programmes. Programmes that survey everybody, everywhere, every day. The person who links these two events is of course Edward Snowden – the renowned whistleblower, regarded by some as a defender of liberty, yet by others as a traitor. Today, he is still on the USA’s most wanted list, but what motivates someone to risk everything and leak top secret government information?
Over half of women have experienced gender-based violence, while 45% of women in the Western Cape alone will experience violence in their lifetime. According to a police report, an average of seven women are murdered every day in South Africa, and most of them at the hands of an intimate partner. As various government officials and organisations hope to get to the root of the problem, there is an increasing need for safe haven centres for survivors of abuse. The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC) is one of these – offering not only a safe space, but empowering survivors of domestic abuse.
I don’t always see myself as a ‘people’s person’. I love it when I’ve gotten to know wonderful new people, but the process leading to that moment for me is exhausting. I am in desperate need of my alone time, and I hate to be in someone’s way.Nevertheless, I decided: ‘What is life for if you don’t step out of your comfort zone once in a while, and what better way of getting to know a culture than living in the middle of it.’ So off I went to South Africa.
I am definitely not the hiking kind of girl. Sure, I appreciate a calming Sunday walk with a nice view, but the adventurous stuff I am happy to leave for others more suited to thrills. Nevertheless, I heard that climbing Table Mountain is kind of obligatory if you’re staying in Cape Town for a long period of time, and if so many had done it before me, why wouldn’t I be able to?
We call a person who risks his/her own life to protect others a ‘hero’. However, despite this being part of their job description, apparently security guards are not treated so well in reality. Not only is being a security guard a low-paying job, but many people look down on them because they are unaware of a security guard’s contribution to fighting crime.
President Jacob Zuma recently said that education is the government’s number one priority, and it should be, because along with the celebration of the good matric results of 2013 came the shocking revelation that out of the 1,261,827 pupils who started Grade 1 in 2002, 699,715 of them dropped out of school before their final exams in Grade 12 last year.
