How do you define beauty? Is it a perfect flower? A stroll by the ocean? Or the joy in a child’s smile? Cape Town is an extraordinary place with different forms of beauty everywhere, whether it’s the community spirit of a township, the invigorating energy of the beach or the classic breath-taking view from Table Mountain.
Beauty should not be defined by appearance, but rather by substance. It should be about how the person, object or place makes you feel because ultimately, that is most important. It’s about appreciating everything for what it is and honouring the emotions that arise from moments of beauty. This collection of photographs might seem random, but each camera click was preempted by a moment of beauty.

The Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay is situated between the mountains and the ocean. The beauty is in the South African hand-made souvenirs you will find there. A great deal of hard work goes into making each item. Photo: Kathryn Higdon

The hypnotic movement of the waves, the feeling of sand between your toes, these are things that draw people to where the water meets the land because that is where we can find tranquillity. It is in these moments of serenity, we find natural beauty. Photo: Kathryn Higdon
